Clinical Leadership
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are Registered Nurses with advanced Master's-level education in clinical health care. In Ontario, NPs can diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and refer patients to specialists. They are fully regulated by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and carry the designation RN(EC), which stands for Registered Nurse in the Extended Class.
NPs are independently licensed to diagnose, treat, and prescribe. In many cases, patients see their NP for longer appointments, which means more time to discuss symptoms, review test results, and build a care plan that actually fits their life.
